One of the best ways to put a smile on your face, a bounce in your step and a warm feeling that you are among friendly people is to go along to the tea dance which is organised and run by Jean Leclerc on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Waterloo Action Centre.

Although it is called a ‘tea dance’ it is quite different from most people’s perception of a traditional tea dance (which usually consists of couples doing waltzes and foxtrots with tea and cakes in the interval). True, Jean Leclerc serves tea and cakes (and what spectacular cakes they are, all personally baked by him) but he also provides so much more in the way of entertainment.

You may find a waltz or foxtrot in the mix of the dances but Jean also introduces and teaches some party dances, line dances, sequence dances and a host of other ‘fun’ things to do. Jean is a very good and patient teacher and quickly brings out the best in everyone – even those with two left feet! The afternoon is never boring – and even when tea and cake is served, there is usually entertainment from some local singers.

You don’t need to have a partner. Lots of single people come along and Jean is very good at mixing and matching people so that you gain plenty of experience. You don’t need a partner for line dancing and if you’ve never tried it you’ll find it straightforward to learn – and it’s great fun and a really enjoyable way to keep fit. Don’t think that it’s all cowboy hats and yee-hawing! There can be some country and western tunes in the mix, but there’s also plenty of dances that can be performed to popular music.

These ‘tea dance’ sessions start at 2 p.m. and finish at 4.30 p.m. and are excellent value at £3.50, including tea and cake.  There’s no need to book – just turn up and you’ll be amazed at the welcome you’ll receive and the friends that you’ll make.
